Keith Payne, Code Enforcement Officer
The office of the Fire Marshal and Code Enforcement is responsible for enforcing the Sag Harbor Village Code and the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code. The Fire Marshal must conduct periodic inspections of commercial premises and multi-family dwellings in accordance with 19 NYCRR Part 1203.3(h).
The Fire Marshal will conduct fire origin and cause investigations in the Village of Sag Harbor when requested to do so by the Fire Chief pursuant to General Municipal Law 204-D. Each year, in conjunction with the Town of East Hampton Fire Marshal’s Office, the Fire Marshal conducts a fire prevention program for each of the five schools in the Village of Sag Harbor. Each class receives a presentation on the principles of fire prevention and how to recognize hazards.
Depending on grade level, students are given the opportunity to demonstrate various fire safety techniques. Younger children demonstrate techniques such as crawling low under smoke, checking the door in the mock bedroom for heat, escaping through the window in the mock bedroom and of course the most important of all: stop, drop and roll. Older children are taught about the crime of arson, safe babysitting techniques and the proper operation of a fire extinguisher.
